Help Me Choose My New Flooring!!
53The Flooring Nightmare!!
We have lived in this house just over 2 years now. When we bought the house, we knew that the floors needed to be replaced eventually, and that is one of the reasons that we were able to get it for a lower price.
With our baby born sick and lots of appointments, we haven't really had the time, or energy, to focus on fixing the floors. We are slowly heading into a new stage of life, where we are finding that we have some time and money to put towards the floor renovation/restorations.
I am excited because it is about time we make this place ours. I figured that the best place to start was the flooring, since it can make such a difference in the house. We don't care for carpet, so prefer something sweepable/mopable.
The colours that I want to do in the house are the tans/beiges maybe a shot of colour - dark blue or burgundy. I am not very good at decorating, or knowing what goes together well and what looks really bad.
That is what this hub is all about!! I thought that since there is such a great community here, I would ask all hubbers to give me their suggestions/preferences/advice on what I should do first. What works best, what do you love, what do you dislike?
I need HELP!!
The Options
With me not knowing much about floors, or interior decorating of any kind, I went to my internet research to find out what is out there now.
There is the basic floors - Hardwood, laminate, ceramic and the ever so lovely - stick on tiles (this is what my house is covered in!)
For the most part, I think that these types of floors are quite cold, we would need to have quite a few throw and area rugs around the place. I really do like carpet, I like the warmth, I love the feel and I love how it makes the room feel cozy.
But...I have 5 kids and a dog and that will just equal a huge mess and ruined carpet!
I have heard about leather flooring, I think that sounds really interesting. I wonder if that is warm or not?
My friend had some cork flooring put into their basement kitchen and it is so nice to walk on and keeps the room warm.
So, tell me what you like...what is good and what isn't good, what is warm, what isn't warm. What do you have? What are the good and bad things about each type?
PLEASE HELP ME!!

I really do love my cork floor, it makes living in the basement not so nasty cold. It's great too because it's a renewable resource, big words for "I've gone Green".
If your floor cannot be sanded down and refinished, they will have to take it all up and start fresh, that may mean laying a new subfloor. If you started with doing just that, you'll get your way through this reno. One small bite at a time. Taking up the floor is going to take you a while and WILL make a large mess. It's only a weekend job if you've got lots of people helping.
Because I'm into watching your resale value... keep to the beige/tan colours and throw in splashes of colour in accessories. Unless this is the house you're going to stay in for the next 15 years. :-)
